Cycling to school
Walking Wednesday’s and Biking Thursday’s in Levin 2006
This is a great collaborative approach spearheaded by Road Safe Central and involving Police, ACC, Public Health, Schools and Sport Horowhenua to encourage everyone to be more active and chose more sustainable forms of transport.
Students from Levin North and Levin East Schools have been pounding the streets each Wednesday through March in fluorescent yellow jackets, while students from Levin Intermediate have been biking each Thursday. The programme required children to sign up and make a commitment to walk/bike to school for four Wednesday’s or Thursdays in March. All the children who signed up received a fluro-vest and a ‘Harry the Hedgehog’ card to be stamped.
The response to the programme has been overwhelming, with positive spin-offs such as families walking to school together, less congestion outside the school gate, both cyclists and walkers being visible to traffic and the promotion of road safety.
Congratulations to everyone invovled! Source
