Promoting and supporting cycling in the Kapiti region

Thanks KCDC for this super pathway along South side of Kapiti Road!
News
- A Kapiti Cycling Inc member was recently in China and as well as enjoying the experience had the following to say:
I went on my own to China for two weeks. It is great to see the mix of road users, including many cycles, in a place like Nanning, and every NZ driver should be sent to a place like that to find out what sharing the road really means! Nanning lies in the south of the autonomous region of Guangxi, on the banks of the Yongjiang. It is connected with other major cities by air and rail. Nanning is a lively industrial city which enjoys a climate where everything is green and in blossom all the year round. The most important agricultural products are rice and sugar-cane, while thanks to the favorable climatic conditions it is possible to harvest subtropical fruits such as mangoes and lychees. The city, which was already the political center and military stronghold of southwest China over 1600 years ago, received its present name during the Yuan period (1271-1368). In 1912 Nanning became the capital of the province of Guangxi and in the 1950s was declared the seat of government of the Zhuang national autonomous region of Guangxi. In 1952 a minorities institute was founded here. Photos from our member are below:

- Core committee member, John Baldwin, recently spent a few days in Perth and has provided us with these photos. Just see what Perth has achieved ... the cycleway is over 50kms long and terminates in Perth CBD - Food for thought and something for Kapiti to aim for! - The Urban Cycling Network Survey Tables were updated in early 2010 - this document details known areas of concern for cyclists in the Kapiti region, and we would appreciate if you have any to add, or any comment to make, to do so via the 'report blackspots and cycling problems' page.
- The Greater Wellington Regional Council has recently launched the online Cycling & Walking Journey Planner. This planner helps make cycling and walking even more convenient by providing easy directions along a direct route from A to B
Creating safe cycling between Paekakariki and Otaki
The Otaki Cycling Environment & Access Network (OCEAN) is the Cycling Advocacy group working for the completion of the North/South long distance Cycle/Walkway between Paekakariki to Otaki and North - find their latest news and updates here.
Cycle paths in Kapiti often lead cyclists onto SH1 where they share the road with high-speed traffic. To change this Kapiti Cycling Inc lobbies and assists:
- local government
- community boards
- Land Transport New Zealand
- Greater Wellington Regional Council.
We would like to see the cycleway extend to Levin and to Palmerston North.
Kapiti Coast Rotary Pathways Trust — cycleways, walkways and bridleways
With the support of our Mayor, Council staff and Rotary club members the Kapiti Coast Rotary Pathways Trust has been established.
The trust is a formal group initiated by Rotary to raise and administer funds for cycleways, walkways and bridleways in the Kapiti district. It is registered as a charity and is non-profit. All trustees are volunteers.
